이 열매를 따서 건조시키면 카카오콩이 되며 그것을 볶아 분말로 만들면 카카오 페이스트,
카카오 페이스트를 압축하여 지방을 뽑아내면 코코아가 되고 여기서 뽑은 지방은 카카오 버터라고 한다.
카카오 페이스트 단계에서 우유 향료를 첨가하여 굳히면 초콜렛이 만들어진다.
